New York: Wood & Holbrook, 1875. Hardcover, First Edition, 5 x 7 1/4", 157 pp. with a catalogue of publisher's books following, burgundy boards with thin black border and gilt title, some corner bumping, previous owner's name on ffep along with personal library stamp of John L. Capen, well known phrenologist and a graduate of the Homeopathic Medical College of PA in 1875, very good or better condition. Written under the surmise that food performs four basic functions: nourishment for the body, supply the waste that goes in the body, maintain animal heat, and furnish the body strength. This book is an early analysis of diet and nutrition, along with many recipes. No meat recipes are to be found here as those recipes are "found in abundance is nearly every cookery book, and this is not intended so much to supplant these books as to supplement them."
