Chicago, IL: Santa Fe System Lines, 1937. 8 x 9" (folded double); 46 pp. when doubled; minor rubbing on back cover; overall very good to near fine condition. This brochure is a May 1937 reprint, published by Santa Fe System Lines. Pages 43-46 have railway maps including The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Co. and connections and an Indian detour and Couriercar Land Cruise. By the early part of the twentieth century, some national parks and monuments had been established in the southwest, particularly Arizona and New Mexico, with quite a few other attractions - Indian pueblos, Spanish missions, and geological formations - all of them prime tourist attractions. Most of these, however, were spread over a large area, and it was still a time when tourists traveled by train instead of by individual car. Getting people to the sites became a big concern, out of which came the idea for the Indian Detours: the trains (primarily the Santa Fe) would bring the people to the larger railway termini (Las Vegas, Albuquerque, Santa Fe) where they would be met by Fred Harvey's fleet of specially built automobiles which would transport them to the wonders of the SW in planned excursions lasting a number of days.
